Wasp Control Information
After reading this you will have a basic understanding of wasp biology. We will not go into exhaustive detail, just simply provide the most useful information.

The basic parts of a wasp The only part of wasp biology that most people care about is the stinger. This is, of course, what makes wasps such a nuisance. They are generally considered worse than bees because at least bees will die once they use their stinger. That doesn’t make it any less painful, of course, but at least you know with a bee that they must have felt in mortal danger before they took such extreme action. Wasps, on the other hand, can afford to be far more casual with the use of their stinger as they can use it multiple times. It is for this reason that you should be extra cautious around wasps, and be careful not to aggravate them if at all possible. This means that if you are approached by a wasp you should stay still and wait for them to move away. Flapping arms will only keep them interested. And if you decide to run, be prepared to run for about fifty yards, because they most likely will follow. The sting contains a venom which can produce an allergic reaction, so if you are stung and start to feel ill or experience excessive swelling, get medical help as quickly as possible as it can be very dangerous.

On the whole, however, wasps will not attack larger animals unless they feel threatened or they think their nest is being attacked. So if you do find a wasps nest, remember to keep back so as not to be perceived as a threat. More often, a wasp’s stinger will be used on other insects, to either paralyze or kill them. They can then be taken back to the nest and fed to the developing eggs, larvae and pupae. Wasps go through these several stages over a period of about two weeks in the nest before finally emerging as an adult wasp. In Spring, the work of building the nest, finding food and bringing it back to the nest for the developing wasps is up to the Queen alone, but once the new adults emerge they take over all these duties, leaving the Queen to lay more eggs. At the peak of Summer, wasps nest can contain thousands of wasps. You should, therefore, leave it to the professionals to get rid of the nest. Attempts made at getting rid of nests by amateurs usually ends in disaster, as even if they destroy the nest they will not get all the wasps, leaving a lot of angry wasps without a home. In other words, you will have a worse wasp problem than before.

Wasps at various stages of development in a nest If you find what you think is a wasps nest and they are swarming round the nest, though, then it is probably actually bees as wasps rarely swarm. For this, a bee specialist needs to be called out to relocate the colony. They are not generally killed as there is a shortage of bees at the moment and they carry out valuable services for the ecology of the country.

Wasps also like sweet things and dead meat, which is why they will sometimes attack picnics. This happens more frequently towards the conclusion of summer because they no longer have eggs to feed protein to, so they can afford to satiate their sweet tooth instead. There is a lot more that can be said about wasp biology, however these are the most important points.
