Hornets
The Hornet is a species of wasp, the largest species of wasp. In fact there are many different types of hornet, just as there are different types of wasp. The most common in the UK is the European Hornet, or Vespa Crabro in Latin. They can be distinguished from wasps by their colour, being orange and brown rather than yellow and black as a wasp is, and also by their size. Hornets are quite a bit bigger than wasps, a normal worker hornet being bigger than most wasp Queens.

A European Hornet gathering material for their nest. There is a misnomer, however, that the greater size also means greater aggressiveness and greater power in the sting. This is not true. In fact, it has been observed that hornets can be less aggressive, sometimes retreating when they are approached. Common wasps and German wasps can be far more aggressive. This does not mean, however, that you should try provoking a hornet, especially near their nest. Hornets, like all wasps, will defend their nests vigorously from all threats they perceive. If you do have a nest close by, therefore, and want it to be removed, you should contact professionals. Hornets are dealt with in the same way as smaller wasps, with an insecticide which will attach to them when they walk through it and eventually kill them. Any attempt to destroy the nest rather than kill the hornets will not work as, although you may well destroy the nest, you will not get all the hornets, which will number at least in the hundreds. Destroying the nest, without killing the hornets, just means that you will have a whole lot of angry hornets buzzing around rather than docile ones. In other words, the hornets will become more of a problem, not less, if you just destroy the nest.

Unlike wasps, hornets can reuse their nest season after season.
Although European Hornets are no more dangerous than wasps, there are many other species of hornet, and in other parts of the world they are both bigger and more dangerous. The biggest is the Asian Giant Hornet, or Vespa Mandarinia in Latin, which grows to about 2in long, with a corresponding wingspan of about 3in. Its sting can be delivered in far greater quantities making it a lot more toxic to the recipient, not to mention painful. Fortunately, they do not live in the UK.

The Asian Giant Hornet. Don’t worry, they don’t live in the UK. Another reason that hornets are actually less of a problem than wasps in many cases is that they concentrate on eating live insects, rather than sweet things or meat, as might be found at a picnic, for instance. This means that they do not bother humans as much as wasps do, not unless humans bother them, that is. If you do have to confront a hornet, it is best not to kill it – it lets off pheromones when it dies which will bring more hornets to come to attack the threat. If you are near the nest when that happens, hundreds of hornets could be on their way. If you are in a position to walk away from it, that would be the best idea, or else let it leave the area if not. If you can afford to be patient, you should not have too many problems. If you keep getting a lot of hornets in or around your property, then you probably have a nest nearby, and it is time to call in the professionals.
